The Honeymoon: What to Remember

After the big day, it’s your time to relax with your new spouse.  What a perfect way to end all of that wedding planning with a nice vacation with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.  Just remember to keep these key details in mind to ensure that your honeymoon goes as smoothly as possible.

Victoria Sullivan of 'Wedding" Magazine tells George Watts about Honeymoon destinations to suit every couple.

  • Of course the first step in planning your honeymoon is deciding on where you want to go!  This of course depends on what you want to do on your honeymoon.  You have to decide whether you want it to be a relaxing vacation with your new spouse or an adventure.  Also you want to realize that while you want this to be the holiday of your life, you will want to set a realistic budget.
  • If just lying around at a beach or hotel resort is not how you want to spend your honeymoon, there are other options that will be sure to keep you and your new spouse active!  There are places all around the world where you can combine the city and culture, go surfing or hiking, or whatever suits you.  Always remember that you can always combine luxury with adventure and can always start off with some activities you have planned out and spend the latter of the journey resting.
  • Before you make any plans, make sure that your passport has at least six months left before it expires and if it doesn’t apply early to get a new one.  It is also a good idea to book the honeymoon tickets in your maiden name, unless you plan on changing your passport before you leave as the name on the passport and booking need to be the same.  Another thing to remember is to have enough money on you for your trip.  While cards are universally accepted there are often plenty of cash only options that you will find having some of the local currency on you will pay off.
  • An often-overlooked necessity would be your medical essentials.  Although this really isn’t by any means a “have to have” on your honeymoon, it is a smart idea to have stomach settlers and headache medicine, just in case.  Finally be sure to bring your marriage certificate.  This is not only valuable for being offered a flight upgrade; it’s also a good idea to take just in case someone needs proof of your marriage.
  • But most importantly don’t forget to tell everyone that you’ve just been married!  No one will offer you a complimentary upgrade if they don’t know that you’ve just tied the not.  Don’t forget to mention that this is for your honeymoon while booking everything and if nothing else you are significantly more likely to get a bottle of champagne in your room when you arrive.  If you don’t ask for anything, you won’t get it.  Just try to be discreet and don’t expect anything.
