Hen Night Ideas - You Make a Cake

ymac

Jodie from our office is getting married in under 2 weeks and is a madly enthusiastic baker, so we  thought she'd be the perfect candidate to try out a hen idea which is becoming incredibly popular, cupcake parties, here’s her story:

My hen night began with the girls in the office secretly preparing their outfits and mine for the night. They had made pink t-shirts with my favourite slogan printed in leopard print text…’OMG..I’m getting married’. Each had their name on the back and of course mine said Bride! : )

We made our way to You Make a Cake, which was conveniently situated, near Calpham South tube station. On the way we entertained the commuters being silly and taking a million pictures of one another. You Make a Cake was just a short walk from the tube station. When we arrived they welcomed us with glasses of champagne and made me feel very special by putting my workstation at the head of the table. After all I am the bride!

Everything was set out for us. We each had a different flavour of cupcake to prepare with our own easy to follow recipes written down next to us. We got to work but had short breaks to drink our champagne and have a bit of a boogey. The iPod docking station they had was a brilliant idea, every few minutes I would rush over to it to select my favourite songs.

We all measured out our ingredients and added everything to our bowls, each time the lovely helpers would take away any equipment that we had finished with, (I wish I could take them home with me next time I bake to clear up after me). Once we had filled our cupcake cases the girls took them away to the oven. Then it was time for decorating!

We were shown some techniques for filling the piping bags which was great to be shown as I usually get it all over floor (and myself) when I’m trying to fill it with buttercream icing at home. Not only did we have coloured icing but we also combined two colours to create some seriously bright combinations. I had pink and yellow which looked delicious. The cake-icing expert then showed us some professional techniques such as the rose and the regular swirl. We then had some time to choose which technique we wanted to go with and set to work at icing our perfectly baked cupcakes. When the icing was finished we were then given an array of sweets and treats to sprinkle over the cakes. Some went for an understated minimalist look while others (me) went for the ‘see how much I can fit on this cake’ look!

The champagne flowed the whole time and the girls there really made it a great night. We came away with 12 cupcakes each in a presentation box to take home and to show everyone how brilliant we were. Mine didn’t make it back that well seen as we ended the night with Karaoke!

I would definitely recommend a visit to You Make a Cake for your hen night / birthday or even just a girls night out. I had a great time and because I love to make cakes I really learned a lot while I was there and will definitely use some of the tips I got next time I bake.  It’s encouraged me to check out any other workshops that they have, such as girls nights out through to date nights and corporate team building parties.’ A big thanks to You Make a Cake and to Kate, Hayley and Rich in the office that organised everything for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better hen night! Now...next thing is the wedding!

Check out the photos of the event below, the girls had an absolute blast!
