Tips for Getting an Upgrade

Small Money

We're a sneaky bunch when it comes to getting luxury for less, and we know you newlyweds wouldn’t mind a few trick on how to spend less, especially if you didn’t have a cheap wedding! We’ve gathered advice from those in-the-know about how to maximize the chance of getting a flight or room upgrade on your honeymoon or holiday.

Check out the Wedding Experts thoughts on your budget.

Getting an upgrade on your flight:

Be prepared: If it really is your honeymoon, make sure you're in prime position to nab your rightful upgrade! Call in advance and have a note put on your booking in advance, take your marriage certificate to the check in with you and arrive in smart/casual dress.

Get on the right side of the check-in staff: Upgrades are usually at the discretion of check-in staff so a bit of flirtatious charm can go a long way. Also, if you regularly fly on the same route, get to know the staff and they'll be more likely to keep you in mind.

Be subtle and discreet: Staff are unlikely to upgrade you if other customers are within earshot. "Have you got seats anywhere else on the plane?" is a rather nice way of asking for an upgrade, or "are there any seats with extra leg room available?"

Scrub up well: Staff will prioritise customers who look the part, so that rules out any jeans and flip flops - wear something smart/casual, and don't underestimate the power of a slick of lippie and well manicured nails!

Be Loyal: If you're a frequent flier, you should sign up for membership. Most airlines have a loyalty scheme, completely free to sign up to and usually you'll be given priority over low fare economy ticket holders when upgrades are available or necessary.

Avoid regular business hours: Flying during the working day obviously means more business people taking up seats and less opportunity for you to fill them. If possible, fly at the weekend or unusual hours to increase your chances.

Getting an upgrade on your hotel room:

Plan as far ahead as possible: The internet is a great place to start your search, strike up an email conversation with the reception before you arrive, so they anticipate your arrival and bear you in mind for upgrade.

Use your charm: Mingling and taking time to talk to the staff will ensure you're remembered at the hotel, which can come in handy in your pursuit for an upgrade. Be friendly and if there's a problem - or even better, if the hotel staff remembers you as a regular customer -- you have a better chance of sleeping in the penthouse suite.

Holiday off peak: Hotel room costs fluctuate wildly. If you want a good deal, plan to stay Sunday- Saturday, and avoid the overcrowded check-ins as an added bonus.

Simply ask nicely: When checking in, simply ask nicely for an upgrade. If there are some available, the receptionist may be inclined to give one to a polite person. They may not have an official upgrading system but perhaps they have a room with a more aesthetic view they can offer you for the same price you paid for a view of the car park.

Accept an apology: If the staff makes a mistake that causes a delay or distress, eg: they misplace your luggage or you sleep badly because of noise, let the receptionist know that an upgrade will help you forget about it!

Keep it brief: If your stay is a short one, that will work out to your advantage. They are not likely to give you a free upgrade if your stay is 4 nights when they might actually be able to sell the room for full price within the next few nights.

So give it your best shot, getting treated like royals (or like the newlyweds you are!) is a terrific feeling. But if not, don’t forget it will still be the best holiday of your life because of your amazing company.
