Something Blue? – A Guide to Wedding Underwear

Searching for the perfect wedding is somewhat of a feat. The first big decision to make is are we going for sexy or sensible wedding underwear? What a decision in itself. Of course you want to feel sexy and bring a bit of spice to the wedding night, but does your dress really call for it? Is all that lace and suspenders going to show through? Are you going to stay in that thin sheath that calls itself a bra for the entire day?

Laura Cloke talks sexy, saucy lingerie for the bride to be:

The answer to all this really lies in the dress. Its time to assess that dress. First, straps? A strapless dress obviously calls for strapless bra, the same with a spaghetti strap dress. A halter neck needs an alterable bra or strapless again. If you have sleeves or thick straps you don’t need to worry so much. Now the backline, is it a normal height meaning your underwear will stay hidden away or is it a lower back meaning you will need a low line of underwear or you could consider something like an adhesive bra. Maybe you don’t even need a bra; do you have support inside your dress or is it corseted. Other options to consider are a corset or corselette a bustier or a long line bra. The number one secret for any bride is Shapewear. You can get many ranges nowadays, and they are getting evermore attractive with their popularity. If you want to shape or slim line yourself this is the perfect option especially if your dress is slightly more fitted.

Whatever you decide is best for your dress you need to take with you to try on with the dress. That way you can make sure nothing is showing or hanging out and no seems can be seen through the dress – you don’t want anything ruining it!

VPL is a no no. Because of this, unless you have a very full dress you should avoid lace. Cotton is a good stable but for a more sumptuous appeal silks or satins are great.

It is generally accepted with most brides that their bum is going to be covered by the dress so the consideration for pants is less about practicality and more about what you like. If you find you had to go for a more practical option on the top half you can go a little more experimental with the bottom. There are many different cuts of knickers so it’s really down to whatever you feel the most comfortable in

  • Thongs – you should be comfortable and used to wearing this type, otherwise avoid this one
  • Seamless underwear – avoids panty lines and gives a smooth and seamless look particularly under sheath dresses
  • Boy shorts and Tangs – these are more comfortable than thongs and also help avoid panty lines
  • Padded panties – these can add some curve to a flat derriere
  • French cut- a slightly sexier cut which now comes in different fabrics.

Again try these on with your dress to make sure nothing shows through.

Another thing to consider is hosiery: do you want or need tights or stockings? If so, take extra for the day as they often don’t last.

Also, make sure you’ve gotten a recent, proper fitting. The last thing you want on your wedding day is to either feel uncomfortable or be spilling out or not filling your bra. Make sure you go to a reputable experienced company who will give you a good fitting.

If you have ended up with the full support shebang and are feeling a little hard done by not being able to wear something a little more sensual, don’t worry about it. Make sure you are comfortable and confident throughout the day, no one knows what you are wearing underneath, and you can always sneak off to change once you’re alone. Lets be honest, watching someone struggling out of her wedding dress is not the best mood setter. If you want something simple, comfortable, yet effective to slip into after the long day; a baby doll, slip or teddy is a great option to keep you looking great.

Your wedding day underwear is meant to be a little bit special and make you feel great so if you are experiencing any of the following problems you definitely need to change that lingerie

  • Shoulder straps digging into your shoulders
  • Back of bra not level with the front
  • Bra stands away from the breastbone
  • Breasts not contained fully within wires, squeezed out of the cups or sagging - chances are you too are wearing the wrong sized bra

Finally colour. Although many choose neutral so it doesn’t show under the dress, if your dress is thick enough you can wear any you want. Gone are the days where every bride needs to feel pure for her wedding day so your underwear doesn’t need to reflect this either. It could be a good idea to incorporate blue in your lingerie for your something blue and essentially generally the lingerie is new however you could have one of each, with old tights or stockings, new bra and blue pants. The choices are endless. `and once you feel you have mastered the art of finding comfortable, invisible underwear, help out your bridesmaids! You don’t want any of them to be uncomfortable either!

Happy knickers search!
