When it comes to wedding jewellery, whether it be engagement rings, wedding bands, cufflinks or favours, the choices can be quite over-whelming, and due to the personal nature of gift it’s so important to get it right. But thanks to modern technology, you’re not limited to what's outside your front door! Fantastic designers are now available from all over the world, and because jewellery is generally small, it’s very cheap for it to be sent to or from just about anywhere.

Which brings us nicely to Ash Hilton, who owns a lovely family run business based in Nelson, New Zealand. Ash’s designs are based on his roots (in more ways then one). He grew up on the rugged and isolated West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, a land renowned for wind swept costal forest, dramatic beaches that are pounded by the Tasman Sea, and bush-covered mountains that expand for miles.

This dynamic landscape has gone onto inspire so much of Ash’s work, which includes jewellery that he has skilfully etched New Zealand native trees, plants and even signposts. As he says, “I try to reflect both the human and natural environment in my work by using symbols and materials that have meaning to me and represent where I come from. From street signs to native trees, my jewellery has always been a pretty literal representation of my surroundings.”
He also has a real focus on ethically sourced material; his gold is taken from a beach from the West Coast where he grew-up. He then goes onto fabricate it himself so all the processes are completed in the lowest impact way possible. He also offers using recycled silver for your pieces, or redesigning heirloom jewellery into something new for you.
Ash get a lot of requests for wedding and engagement rings, they can do completely one-off designs and Ash can help the couple design custom etching of symbols that are important to them; you can incorporate scenery, a special place, or a symbol that holds a lot of meaning for the both of you.
So take a minute and say Kia Ora to Ash and his family and discover this amazing little secret!
