Adele Parks is the queen of uplifting romantic fiction. With over 1 million UK book sales alone, Adele recently launched her ninth Top 10 bestseller "Love Lies". We caught up with the fab novelist for a chat about her books and why she was inspired by all things weddings...
What keeps you motivated in writing?
Simply, I've always wanted to write. I actually write as a way of sorting things out in my head and did so even before I was a novelist. I don't think I need motivating per se because it's so much a part of me. I wake up in the morning and wonder what I can do today! I'm actually about to go on holiday which is making me nervous because I won't be able to write, I'll have to read instead. Admittedly, sometimes there's that day in the writing process - perhaps an emotionally grueling or big scene coming up - where I sometimes need a kick, but overall I love to entertain and see the end entertainment product. That's motivation for me.
What do you read yourself?
I read everything! When I first met my husband, I was very much disapproving of people limiting themselves to certain genres. I told him I was into all kinds of books but when I asked what he liked to read, he answered sci-fi. I read everything apart from that! I do actually judge a book by its cover, especially when it looks like a lovely summer read. I do read within my own genre, as an author you'd be nuts not to. But I love the subjects of the genre I write in - they genuinely interest me.
Why did you decide to use wedding planning as a theme in this novel?
Because I love weddings! I'm known as the Wedding Girl amongst friends. I become really enthusiastic about wedding planning! I wanted to write about the great moments in a woman's life - your wedding day is undoubtedly one of those moments. I wanted to write a fantasy book and a fairytale - and I believe the most fairytale day in a woman's life is her wedding day.
Did your own wedding inspire this novel?
I eloped! Actually, I did wear a gorgeous Jenny Packham dress at my wedding which she wears in the book - I loved describing a romantic, thoughtful dress. We had a lovely wedding in Vegas which was very intimate, just us two and my son.
What makes Mr. Right?
Mr. Right is different to different people. For me, humour is incredibly important. As well as being gorgeous, my husband is very funny. I think Mr. Right is also the one who is kind and caring, who makes you feel safe. I actually feel quite sorry for men in this situation - everyone always goes on about Mr. Right but they must be thinking where is my Mrs. Right! I think it's really individual for people but there is a truth in the belief that when you're old you've still got to make each other laugh and feel comfortable with each other.
What advice would you give brides-to-be tuning in to Wedding TV?
Enjoy your big day! It flies by, don't waste a moment worrying about things. No one will notice if your hair grip slips, if it's too hot at the venue or something like that. They will notice if you look stressed or unhappy. As long as the bride is happy, everyone's had a good day - trust me!
